Biotic and abiotic immobilization of ammonium, nitrite, and nitrate in soils developed under different tree species in the Catskill Mountains, New York, USA.

Abstract

Soil samples from monospecific plots of three of Catskill Mountains’ predominant tree species (American beech, northern red oak and sugar maple) were examined for comparison of nitrogen uptake/decomposition rates. Implications of the study results can be important for analyzing long-term nitrogen flux and potential acidification of soil and water.
