Nitrogen retention in soil organic matter (SOM) is a major process influencing the accumulation and loss of nitrogen in forest ecosystems. This study compares the immobilization of ammonium, nitrite, and nitrate in soils developed under different tree species. It also examines the roles of biotic and abiotic processes in soil nitrogen retention.
